Nicholas obtained the Boy Scout rank of Eagle Scout at the age of 14. In High School, he was also heavily involved in the his High School's NJROTC unit. He was promoted to NJROTC Company Operations Officer at the end of his junior year, and over the summer he was awarded the NJROTC Area’s top cadet. At the beginning of the school year, he was awarded the Legion of Valor’s Bronze Cross for Achievement, on August 31st. As a senior, his best friend had a grand mal seizure in the middle of his science class. He threw the desks out of the way, rolled him on his side and yelled for the teacher to call 911. He successfully held the scene under control until New Orleans EMS and the New Orleans Fire Department arrived. His friend is now a doctor working at Crescent Falls University Hospital, and as a major advocate for the disabled.

While Nicholas was a Junior in college at Eastern Kentucky University for Fire Protection Engineering Technology, he became involved in a volunteer fire department and he also met met a Freshman named Jennifer.  After graduating, he was hired by a firefighting research organization where he worked for seven years on various firefighting safety improvements. While he was working for them, he obtained his master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland. Jennifer transferred to the University of Maryland to complete her business degree, and while Nicholas was working continued to work as a research engineer, the two married. After graduating, he was hired to a national engineering firm as a fire protection engineer.  Two years later, Nicholas and Jennifer had their son, Kyle.

Nicholas continued working with his engineering firm faithfully, until the family began to have money troubles. Nicholas began to dig up his college experience and began working with a national engineering firm as a fire protection engineer in his days off. When the company expanded, Nicholas ended up with a promotion to Shiloh County, forcing him to uproot his wife and young son.
After about a year in Shiloh county, Nicholas began to think back to his time in firefighting and he desired to return to it. After talking with Jennifer for several long nights, Nicholas took a long absence from his engineering firm to begin working through the Shiloh County Fire academy. After passing the academy and returning to his engineering job, he was assigned to the Engine for his field training and after completing both that and his probationary period, was lucky enough to stay for a few months and then moved to the squad as he had just gained his paramedic qualification. Only a few weeks later, the squad was dissolved and was moved to the ladder as the Ladder 1 paramedic. While working with the ladder for a few shifts, Nicholas was hit with the drastic news that his wife, Jennifer, had only months to live due to stage four leukemia. Nicholas took a leave from both jobs and took his family on a long trip across the county, as was one of the final wishes of his wife. During this trip, Nicholas bonded with one of his former Lieutenants with Cumberland Ridge, who became a major source of strength during this time. Approximately three weeks after returning from trip across the nation and after several failed bone marrow transfusions, Jennifer passed on March 5th. He gained his SAR qualification during this time before he moved to station two on the dive unit after the loss of his CRFD lieutenant, mentor, and best friend. He then moved back to Engine 11 as its lieutenant before transferring to the squad. During this time, Nicholas had several problems with his son, Kyle, as Kyle blamed him for his mother's death. After about a year of trying to get his life straight and dating, he married Shiloh County Sheriff Deputy Hailey White. However, shortly after the return from their honeymoon, Hailey suffered an ectopic pregnancy, leaving the couple apprehensive to have a child.  However, the two are trying to have another child.

Bio: Hailey and her younger brother, Jim, did not have the best of lives growing up.  Hailey’s father, a career military man, was killed shortly after Hailey was born while her mother was pregnant with Jim.  The family grew up with significant financial struggles, but her mother was able to scrape up enough money to send her children to a private school.  However, this expense required their mother to take out a third job, forcing Hailey to care for her brother.  When Hailey went into 9th grade at her local high school in Greenville, South Carolina, she joined the school's NJROTC unit. Soon turned the 16, she joined her local police explorer group and fell in love with law enforcement. She was promoted to NJROTC Company Operations Officer of her high school at the end of her junior year, and over the summer she was awarded the NJROTC Area’s top cadet.  At the beginning of the school year, she was awarded the Legion of Valor’s Bronze Cross for Achievement, on August 31st.  She then pursued her college education in psychology.  While in school, she met one of her fellow students, named Gregory. During this time, she began a long relationship with Greg, which saw Greg propose to her. Hailey eagerly accepted, and life seemed perfectly fine for a few hours. However, when the couple arrived at Greg's apartment, Greg insisted on a sexual relationship, which Hailey did not accept. Greg then sexually assaulted her, forcing Hailey to drop out of college and flee.  She ended up at a Navy recruiter’s office and she enlisted.  After attending recruit training in Great Lakes, Illinois, she was assigned as a operations specialist on the USS Carl Vinson. She worked mainly on combat air controller for the F-14 tomcats. Later, with her specialized computer skills, she moved off of ships and joined a specialized intelligence unit. During her stint with this unit, she was involved in a "sensitive" mission in Panama. While "in country", she was tasked with taking down a major drug trafficker and probable terrorist. Her team ambushed, much of the supporting elements were killed, leaving the only two women on the team, she and her best friend, Alex, to be spared with grave gunshot wounds to the abdomen. With the two women wounded and alone, they struggled to make it back to a predominately American medical school and the eventual rescue by Marines.  With her injury, she was given an honorable discharged as a Petty Officer First class (E-6).  She still bears the scar on her lower right abdomen.

Now with the trauma from her college years and from the military, Hailey ended up with her brother and mother in Lexington, Kentucky, where she tried to recover. Hailey's no longer had a desire to do anything with her life.  After being forced to get a job by her family, she joined the local police department where she quickly chosen to join ERU team as a Technical officer.  She did not want the job, and began to resent the department.  After a year with the department, she quit.  Jim, then hatched a scheme to get her in touch with friends which saw him have Hailey get intoxicated. He then stole her phone and copied all of her contacts. Jim found her best friend, Alex, who now lived in Oxnard and got the two in touch again. Hailey then found out from Alex that the Shiloh County Sheriff's office was hiring. Alex became the only person that she knew in the area and they were rarely seen apart, due to Hailey's fear of her former fiancée. Several years later, she was walking and was attacked by Greg, who never moved on from their former life. During this attack, a stranger came to her rescue, managing to get himself injured in the fight, but this man turned out to be a Shiloh County Fire Department Lieutenant named Nicholas LeBlanc, and the two began dating. Despite some trouble between her and Nicholas’s son Kyle from a previous marriage, she and Nicholas were married almost a year later. Unfortunately, Hailey experienced an ectopic pregnancy after their honeymoon, and causing the couple to still be nervous about having a child.  At the urging of her new husband, brother, and mother, she graduated with honors from a local university with a degree in Psychology, she transferred back to the Sheriff department in order to get a raise to assist the couple and other partners with their joint business venture, The Great Outdoors Shop. She attempted to pull a few shifts at the shop, but the strain on her family life was too much for the couple, so while Nicholas was working with his engineering firm during their son's school hours, she helped by working as a paramedic at the firm.  After Kyle got into Crescent Falls State, Hailey left Chapman engineering and worked to further her career. She was promoted to Corporal shortly after and assumed a Field Training Officer Position.  Hailey took the Sergeant's exam as soon as she was able, but when a new SAU team opened on B-Platoon, she applied and was accepted onto the team.  Soon, she was informed that the Sheriff's Department was opening a new unit, the Emergency Support Service.  Due to her background with SAU, she was chosen as the unit's Sergeant in July of 2017.

*I come home after a long 12 hour shift of dispatching.  I come home and head up to the bathroom to shower.  I turn the TV on to a TV show that I watch as I begin to prep my shower.  I hear the breaking news come on and for some reason, I walk over to the TV and hear the news woman talking about how the ERT:FD is missing one person.  I see a person come up and then a role gets thrown to him.  I see the firefighter flip and then show off the back of his shirt.  I see that is says Pump 11 in gold.  I suddenly feel sick to my stomach when I see him.*

'Ohmygod!  Nick!'

*I suddenly watch the TV with a lot of focus as I wait for Nick to come up.  When they keep talking about how reports say that he has been down for too long.  I feel a tear rolling down my face as I saw a prayer for my husband.*

*As I drive home after a tough shift, I see a guy and his pregnant wife/girlfriend.  I suddenly feel the call coming back.  I pull off on a back street and then shut the car off.  I feel sick to my stomach and then sigh.  I feel everything coming back and then I try to call Hailey, but my phone is dead.  I get ahold of myself and then head home.  I put my truck in park and then turn the truck off.  As I open the door, I see Hailey come running out to the car and then hug me.  I get out of the car and return the hug under the light coming from the kitchen.  I grab her hand and head inside as we start to talk.  Because of the time, I sit back in bed and let it out as I hug Hailey as we go to sleep together.*

*I come home after my shift and pull my truck into the garage.  I grab my sheets from the truck bed and get ready to go and wash them.  As I walk in, I see Hailey getting ready to bring Kyle to school.  I walk over to them and give Hailey a hug before putting down my wallet, phone, and other stuff I carry.*

'Good morning, babe.'

*I take a smell and find that I do smell a bit like the fire that we had the night before.  As Kyle walks out the door and Hailey following, I manage to kiss the back of her neck as she jumps.*

*I cheer when I see Vanderbilt defeated Tennessee.  Then I see that we got a bowl bid and kept theirs from them!  Finally, revenge!  Now all we have to do is cheer for Kentucky so Tennessee will have eight losses in a single season and then not any road wins.  I go upstairs and let Nick know the score of LSU game and then I check the websites that I bookmarked to see if I can still get the Christmas presents I need to purchase.*

*I pull up to my house and press the button to open the garage. I pull past Hailey's car as I pull in. I turn my car off and put the keys into my pocket as I open the back garage door to start decorating. I start to put the Christmas decorations up around the house before I walk back and look at the cars. Both of our cars now have antlers on the windows as I check the front of the car. I see Hailey's car with a red, plush nose on her car and then a black one on mine. I shake my head and walk into the house. I see Hailey getting dressed before I lean against the door frame.*

*I sigh as I cut my car off and get out.  I leave it outside rather than in the garage since I have to carry all of the stuff that Nick left for me for our anniversary.  I grab some of the flowers and the other stuff he had at my console this morning and bring it inside.  I try to juggle the vase, the white/pin board he left me with all the love notes, and the little stuffed animal he left.  I feel kind of bad considering that he went all out and all I was able to do was sneak into his office and leave some stuff there, and some more at home.  I walk inside, remembering that I still have like thirty minutes before he gets home.  I start trying to decide what stuff to put where and where to hide stuff from him just to mess with him.  I go to put some of the flowers on the table, when I see that he already has a centerpiece set up of red roses for me.  I start to panic almost, wondering how much overtime we need to work to pay for the flowers.  I bring his present downstairs and set it on the table.  I go upstairs and see that I have a few minutes left, so I start to change out of my uniform and into something more comfortable.*

*I come in with some of the stuff that Hailey left in my office for our anniversery. I walk in a bit earlier than usual considering I got an hour off the end of work. I walk inside and see a present on the table, and it's not my wrapping since it actually looks good. I walk into the office, or a storage area for Hailey's college stuff and my shabby little man cave. I grab Hailey's and walk back toward the table with my bags and box in hand. I try to arrange them better than just throwing them in the table would. I hear several clicks and clacks as I head over to the steps. I see Hailey coming down, wearing a white dress and trying to get an ear ring on. I lean down in the bottom if the railing. I whitle, trying to prolong the time it takes her to get down so I can keep stairing and see if it will shock her.*

*After we finish packing, I help everyone make sure we have everything as we load into my truck.  I take hold of Hailey's hand after I put my sunglasses on as we head out for our Thanksgiving vacation.  After a few days out in the mountains, we celebrate Thanksgiving dinner and then let Kyle go to bed.  After watching cheesy Christmas movies and the fireplace, Hailey and I get to talking.  We start to discuss a bunch of different stuff as the night passes.  After a while of not hearing anything from Hailey, I glance around to see her face, and see her eyes closed as her head rests on my shoulder.  I smile and kiss her.*

'I love you, hon.'

*I finish packing up the truck with what I have, but I still need the makeup bag that Hail has with her in the bathroom getting dressed.  I smile as I look to Kyle in his Agrious hat since he’s riding with me on the float as my sergeant.  I head upstairs and see Hailey changing into one of her dresses in front of the full-body mirror, trying to see if they fit I guess.  I lean against the door post as she changes, trying to see her front in the bluish dress.*

*I send Nicholas down to pack the truck with my toiletry bag as I walk over to my closet.  I take the dresses for the weekend off of the rack and lay them on the bed.  I fell like I’ve gained some weight, so I decide to try on at least the teal dress I’m wearing.  I sigh since I’m not to keen on the idea due to last year’s issue.  I try to zip the back of the dress up as much as I can, but I can’t easily.  As I turn to see the pull on the mirror, I jump as I turn to see Nick at the door.  I’m surprised that he’s there, but it’s like him to do the like, so I sigh again.*

‘Can you zip this up, babe?’

*I push myself off of the wall and walk over to her and help her zip up the back of the dress before she tries to flick her hair back, hitting me in the face.*

‘Hello.’

*I turn around when I hear Nick call that I hit him and sluggishly apologize as I go to fixing my makeup.  When I see Nick take a seat down on the bathtub step, thinking that he’s done. I look up from my lip pencil and as ask if  he is done.*

‘You got everything packed, babe?’

‘Yeah, everything but that toiletry bag.  Once you’re done, we’ll be ready.’

‘Where did you put the tickets?’

*I pause and raise an eyebrow, figuring that Hail knew where they were.*

‘Don’t tell me you lost the tickets.’

‘…I thought that you wanted to hold onto ‘em…’

*As I shift from my lip pencil to make sure that everything looks good when coupled with the dress, I hear Nick tell me that I have the tickets.  My anger that I’ve been holding for a while boils over and I snap probably a bit to hard at Nick.*

‘No!  Why would I want to hold on to the things!  That was what you were doing!’

*In sudden surprise at Hail’s outburst, I practically jump from my seat and start trying to figure out what just happened.*

‘Wait, I thought that you said that…’

‘NNNO!  I don’t want to take the tickets.  I have all of the toiletry and makeup bags to deal with.’

*I start shaking my head as I figure that I need to wear a corset for a better fit in the dress and my husband acting clueless.*

‘I’m sorry.  I just thought that you wanted to handle the tickets…’

‘Nicholas, I don’t even like Mardi Gras.’

*I walk out of the bathroom and start throwing some of my clothing into our shared suitcase, visibly pissed off.*

*After Hailey drops the news that she does not like Mardi Gras, I basically stagger since she never let on that she was not a fan.  I regain my posture and follow her into the bedroom.*

‘Honey, I’m sorry.  I had no idea that you did not like going.’

*I stand in amazement as Nicholas tells me that he had no idea.*

‘Really?!  That’s what you are going with?!?’

*Rather than answer her question, I basically feel like I’ve been punched in the stomach because I had no idea of Hailey’s sentiments, so I keep quiet.*

‘Well I’m married to an idiot then.  I mean you really didn’t know?’

‘No baby, I had no idea.  Look.  If you want to stay here, we can.’

‘Again, really?  You live for this stuff.  I’m not going to do that for you.’

‘Well I’m not going to make you go if you don’t like it.’

‘Whatever, just get the tickets.  I don’t want to ruin a season for you.’

*I give Hail a hug and walk over to get the tickets and get them into the bags like she wanted and wait for her to finish up and come down.*

*I sigh as Nicholas goes downstairs to get the tickets.  I sarcastically shake my head and finish up as I walk down to the car and climb in.  I take ahold of Nicholas’s hand as we head out to his hometowm.*

*I kiss Hailey goodbye as I head out with Kyle to the Superdome.  I head downstairs with the Krewe’s rosters and everything that I need to help with costumes.  As we arrive, I get out and grab the stuff that I need.  I walk in and bring Kyle and another Float Lieutenant over with me to security.  I head up and speak with the two people at security who tell me that no one can go up until 10:00.  I ask her if even I am not allowed to go upstairs due to my involvement with the costumes.  She asks the event coordinator my question and relays that I am not allowed to go upstairs.  I nod and shake my head as I walk outside of the superdome.  I stand outside and see that other people have arrived.  I fill them in on the situation while I watch people struggle with flowers for each of the table since it’s Valentine’s Day.  I open the door for two of them as the come out and continue to ferry centerpieces inside, but security locks the doors.  I watch as people continue to have to come in and help them to get inside.*

‘Well that wasn’t smart of them.’

‘Yeah.  Ya think?’

*I continue to text the chairman of the board of directors.  He tells me that he is texting someone on the inside of the superdome who can get me in.  A few minutes later, the security woman walks out.*

‘Nicholas LeBlanc?’

‘Yes M’am?’

‘You can come in and head to the third floor.’

‘Thank you M’am.  Greg, Kyle, let’s go.’

*I get the bag of my rosters in my hand and start walking toward the door.*

‘No one else is coming in with you?’

‘My son and another helper.’

‘Okay, but no one else can use your name?’

‘Nope…’

‘All right then.  C’mon in.’

*I walk inside and walk to the escalators, drawing looks from everyone on the first floor.  I ride the escalator up and then walk up to the third floor on the unpowered escalator and follow the signs to the Krewe of Elis quarters’.  When I find our area, I look around and see that the dance floor and stage has already been put in place and all of the stuff has been moved and is now out of place.*

‘Shit…  Kyle, help Greg organize this.  I need to see if they brought us theextra costumes we need for the band.’

*I head downstairs to the second level to find the VIP dressing rooms to make sure that the costumes are here.  When I can’t find them, I sigh and check my watch, making sure that the costumes should already be here.  I sigh and head back up.  I pull my phone out and call the woman who runs the costume business and is their lead tailor as I head up to help organize the costumes.*

*I nod when my dad tells me that I need to help to organize the costumes.  Greg tells me how we are organizing the hats.  As I organize them, I make sure to note where the costume racks are for each float.  Once we finish getting everything set up in the order it needs to be around the table, I relax and walk over to the food on the edge of the tables and make a plate as I check the clock on my phone.*

‘It’s 10:00.  They ought to be letting people in now.’

*I walk into the room and see Greg and Kyle relaxing and I see that they have everything set up.  I take a breath and walk though the little gap they have between the two front tables as the event coordinator walks up to me.*

‘Nicholas LeBlanc?’

‘That’s me.  Can I help you?’

‘I wanted to help you with some of the logistics in the room’

‘Oh good, a technology lesson.  You don’t know how much I could use that.’

‘Awesome.  Well, this is the microphone.  Give it a long push and it turns on and off, with a green light for on and no light off.  A short push will turn it orange and mute the microphone.    Over here is the mixer.  We’ll bring an iPod up and plug it into here for background music.  You can adjust the volume from the phone.  Yeah.  Any questions?’

‘No, I think that’s all.  Thanks.  I can get you from security should I need you?’

‘Yep.  Have a good ride.’

‘Thanks.’

*As the guys start to walk in, I turn to Kyle and grab the microphone.*

‘Kyle, go head to the back and bring me the hats and the masks for the floats that I ask for.  Greg, pull our costumes for us if you don’t mind.’

“Guys, all of your costumes are on racks around the room.  In order to get hats and masks, I need all senior float lieutenants to head to the center table and count the numbers of hats and masks because you need to sign for them and then your float will be responsible for them.  Thank you.’

*I turn and see a large group of people gathering in front of me as I ask for a float number.  I relay the numbers to Kyle and call out the number for him to get the hats and masks.  I get people to sign for them after the count the masks and hats, and everything seems to be going pretty well.  All of a sudden the stupid questions start coming in like ‘where do I put my tuxedo?  When are we leaving?  Where can I get smaller hats?  Where can I get my wristbands for the after party?  Which buss do I get on?  I take the mic from Greg and turn it on so that I can cover all of these questions, multiple times in one blanket announcement.*

“Guys, tuxedoes cannot be left here because there will be no security in this room and anything that is left up here will be thrown away.  We are going to get on the busses at approximately 1:30 and we’ll call you down, so just wait for us to call you down and go as a float to avoid people from getting mixed up.  I do not have any extra masks or hats, so if you do not have them. Look in the bags that were given to you when your Senior Lieutenant came to pick up the costumes.  Try to find them before you come to get them.  I also do not have any wristbands for the after party, so if you need them to get in side, you had better hope there is a roll call because elsewise you are SOL.  We also have a costume designer on site and they will be able to make some minor adjustments to the costumes.  Any questions can be relayed through Nicholas LeBlanc or Greg Kennedy at the center table.”

*I shut the mic off and wait for someone to ask another stupid question because I’m sure there will be another, and sure enough more people come with the same questions.  I head down with the rest of the guys and consolidate the tuxedoes that people have left onto our center rack.  I walk down and finally find the correct bus for our float and head into the front row as we wait for the police escort.  Finally when they arrive, we roll out, blocking of portions of I-10 as we head into city park.  As we get off of the busses, I look around for our float and all I can find is Float 31, but not our new float, 32.  As a rumor spreads, I call the chairman of the board of directors and get the story confirmed that we couldn’t make a turn with our 150 foot long float.  I chuckle and shake my head as Kyle cheers since he bet someone that we would wreck the float.  When I hear that it was four cars that we took out that we illegally parked, I chuckle as we head down the street to try and find the food that we were supposed to have next to our float.  We finish eating our “floatside” meal as I shake the guy’s hand, telling him that I’ll see him tomorrow as I walk back to the float.  I see two of the krewe personnel who want our float rosters.  I give it to them and ask how bad the damage was to our float since we have a special transmission on our float to make it turn easier due to its tracking ability.  I do a quick walk-around, making sure that most of the visible damage has been fixed.  When I see that it has, I climb onto the float and start setting the bags of beads up so I can stand comfortably.  Once I’m set up, I make sure to keep my hat and mask ready since I have to have them in order to ride and not get pulled off of the float.*

*I help Kyle move my stuff out of my way as I plop down.  I watch as Kyle takes pictures of his set up with his bead rack.  I turn around and walk over to the others guys and lean up on the prop of the flying lion.  I watch as the rest of the parade goes in front of us while holding a chat with the guys on the front section of our float.  I smell something funny and immediately stand up, trying to get more of it into my lungs.  I instantly know that something is burning in the electrical system.*

‘I smell electrical fire.’

*One of the guys from the other side of the float nods as he smells it too.  I lean off the side of the float and start yelling for the tractor driver since he is up by the tractor and he can do a walk around and make sure that we’re okay.*

‘TRACTOR DRIVER!  TRACTOR DRIVER!’  Can you check in the back of the float?  I smell fire.’

*He nods to me too as I continue to look down the side of the float, trying to see if there is anything that I can see myself.  When he doesn’t come back and I smell everything stop, I forget about it.  As we roll, I continue to make sure that Kyle is having fun as we continue rolling.  We throw most of our stuff that I purchased and have basically an enjoyable ride.  As I turn around, I look to check my phone and I see a couple of messages, even though I lost service.  I slide my finger across my phone looking to read the messages from Hailey.*

*I smile as Nicholas kisses me.  I fall asleep for another two hours and then wake up.  I chuckle when I realize that this is the first year that I won’t have Kyle to spend the day with, so I get the entire day to myself.  I get dressed in a crew T-shirt and some jeans and then go through the newly renovated riverwalk.  I head to the new Neman Marcus and find a nice pair of earrings and decide that I can wear for tomorrow night.  When I finish with everything shopping wise, I head to the room and start to get dressed into my gown.  I put my dress on and then start with my hair and my makeup, trying to look as good as I can.  Once I finish getting dressed, I grab an old bag of spare bags so I can help my husband and son carry off everything they throw before heading down to the busses.  I text Nicholas and Kyle both when I’m in the line waiting and I finally get aboard one of the busses, which then pulls up a few feet before we stop waiting for a police escort.  Eventually, we snake around the city in a different way than we normally do, causing me to sign and everyone start asking me what is going on.*

‘Honestly, I dunno.  We’ve never gone this way before.  This is a weird way to snake around.’

*I text Nicholas where we are and then wait before we finally make it to the superdome.  I grab all of my stuff and then head in with the rest of the crowd, trying some of my old tactics and the ones that Nicholas taught me.  Once I get in and to our table, I text Nicholas and Kyle again as people continue to get in front of my and trying to take my rail spot.  I decide that there is no way that I can get up by the rail, so I text Nicholas and Kyle and let them know that I won’t be up on the rail seeing them since it’s nothing but my son’s first time riding, and people are being idiots and trying to take my spots.  Besides, I don’t want to have to carry any more than I have too and I don’t want to get in a fight this year.  I smile as I hear their float get announced and wait for my men to get back to our table.*

*As we get ready to head into the dome, I try to dodge the stuff flying from the other floats as guys give us stuff to throw since they don’t want to carry it either.  We enter the blanked area of the dome and as we head through, I look to Kyle.*

‘Mom’s in the first bunker here, in front of the steps.’

*I keep looking for Hailey, trying to see through the mess of crowds while throwing what I have left.  All of a sudden, Kyle hits me on the shoulder.*

*I nod when I head my dad tell me to look for my mother.  As we continue looking and throwing, I head someone shouting my name, and I jerk my head down to see my mother leaning over the baracade.*

‘Right there!  Right there!’

*I start dumping the two bags that I destined for my mother by dumping the bags that we bought while my dad throws the stuff that was tossed to us.*

*I look through what I was thrown before I find my wife.  I lean off the throat and toss two half empty bags to her at the edge of the barricade.  As I see what else I can throw her, I lean off of the float and wave as I see her flinch as Kyle continues to throw smaller bags from the rear of the float.  I throw another dozen beads and look to Kyle and slide a bag of 14 dozen beads to him with my foot.*

‘I’m done.  It’s your job to throw the rest of this.’

*I catch everything that Nick and Kyle throw me, trying to make sure that I can hold everything Nick throws with my foot.  I use my toes to keep my shoe on as I recover after the guys pass.  I pull everything back on my side of my barricade and then head back to the table to put the bags underneath the table.  I get two drinks for each of them and then manage to bring them back to the table and put them in two of the open spots before taking my own and drinking some more of my daiquiri.*

*I smile as my dad tells me that I’m in charge of throwing the rest of our stuff.  When I finish up only one more, leaving us with a total of six bags to get off the float.*

‘Where are we stopping, or where are we supposed to be stopping?’

‘We’re supposed to be done at the front of the dome, right by my truck, so we’ll see.  If we are that close, you can get off the float and I’ll lower the stuff to you.’

*Kyle nods as I watch as we stop, right where we are supposed to stop.  I unhook my harness and then walk over and start handing stuff down to Kyle on the ground.  I come off of the float and help him move them into my truck, about 100 yards away.  After we get everything in the truck bed, I walk with Kyle through the doors and head into the dome, and make my way over to the bunker.  I stop outside the outer doors and start flipping the light up roses on for Hailey and zipping up the bag that they’re in to make it a more mysterious Valentine’s Day gift.  I head in s one of the other board members stops me and then gives me a bouquet to give Hailey.  I thank him and then walk over to Hailey.  I walk up behind her and kiss her on the neck.*

‘Happy Valentine’s Day, babe.’

*I hand her the gifts and take a seat next to her as I take a drink of the Coke she got me.  I watch as she opens her gift as the main act comes on.*

*I smile as the guys give me my Valentine’s Day gifts.  I reach up and kiss Nick as I start looking through the bag.  When I see the 12 roses with two white and the rest red, I smile as I look to Nick.*

‘Continuing with your tradition, huh?’

*I look at Nick waiting for an answer, but I see that he is already asleep.  As the main act comes on, I turn to Kyle to crack a joke at Nicholas, but I see he’s asleep.  I nod to some of our friends and nudge Nicholas to wake him up since he said this was an act that he wanted to see.  He groggily wakes up as we hug each other and take in the performance.*

*I come home from work and park my truck in the garage before I get out.  I head inside, tired from work, but excited that we’re getting ready to leave for New Orleans.  I’m already dealing with people from the parade with all of their “infinite wisdom,” but it’s one of the best times of the year if you ask me.  I come in and toss my keys on the counter before I start taking out the rest of my everyday carry stuff.  I leave it on the counter and head upstairs where I start the TV and finish packing.  I decide that since it’s mid morning, and I’m rather tired, I sit down on the couch and start watching something on TV.  I eventually fall asleep since I’m too tired to do much else.*

*I come home from work, with Kyle and I head back home.  I don’t really have anything special planned for Nick, but at least we can be together on his birthday.  Kyle and I get home and I get out.  I pull into the driveway and I find Nick’s truck in the garage.  I shut off my car and get out before I head inside.  I open the door and I hear Nick snoring on the couch.  I stifle a laugh before I notice that he’s laying on the couch with his head thrown back with his mouth open.  I stick a hand out of the door to Kyle to let him know to keep quiet and then I head outside again.  I push the door nearly closed, but I make sure that I don’t have to turn the knob again.  I grab my phone and open up the photos app.  I scroll all of the way up to one of the first things there, a ceremony from my NJROTC days.  I make sure to keep the volume as low as I can and then I fast forward the first seven minutes or so until I get to the point of the arriving party.  I get the timing right and then I sneak into the house.  I quietly walk around the back of the pantry and to the other entrance to the living room, behind Nick.  I crank the volume on my phone to as loud as it can go, rest my phone on the back of the couch, and aim the speakers toward Nick.  I press play and try to get away as fast as I can.*

*All of a sudden, I’m awakened by the loudest shrill that I’ve heard in quite a long while.  I hear a ship’s whistle in my ear, much like the one that is blown when the ship’s commanding officer arrives.  I jump up almost as high as my heart is coming out of my chest.  In the process, I hear something hitting the ground out of my left ear, the only one that is working right now.  I turn around and see Hailey’s phone on the ground playing something.  I look around and hear laughter from the outside door and from the steps behind me.  I look over and see Kyle almost doubling over and behind me, Hailey is literally rolling on the ground laughing.  *

‘WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO DO?  KILL ME?!  JESUS!’

*In between laughs, I manage to make out a clever comeback to my dad’s comment.*

‘Well, if we were trying to get you to lose your hearing, I guess we succeeded there.’

‘WHAT?!?’

*More heinous laughter.*

*I manage to somewhat compose myself as I get back to my feet and work my way back down to the first floor where I grab my phone.  I pause the video and quiet it down, still laughing.*

‘You like your surprise party, babe?’

‘Well it was a surprise!’

*I start to slow my breathing to another normal rate before I look to Hale.  I still can’t hear out of my right ear, but whatever for now.  I sigh and go to kiss her.*

‘Happy birthday, babe,’

‘Thanks, hon.’

*We sit back down and relax for a minute as I wait for my hearing to come back.  I know that now I need to go and finish packing since the time is at least around 5:00.  I sigh, trying to delay.*
