*We're in the station watching TV when I hear the tones drop.*

“911 to Engine 12, Engine 13, Engine 19, Ladder 32, Ladder 33, Rescue 1, Squad 7, Battalion 2.  Respond 12-48 South 2nd Street, Ft. Shannon. 1-2-4-8 South 2nd, for a reported Structure fire with possible entrapment.  Sheriff’s Department 220 is on scene. They’re advising fire showing from the 3rd floor of a four story apartment building. Three victims possibly trapped unknown location. Sheriff's 220 is advising one victim currently in the window. Operate Ops 1. Time Out, 21-17.”

*When I hear the slew of tones, I realize that it's definitely a working fire dispatch, including us. I jump up, kicking the foot rest of the recliner down as I run over to the pole. I head down and I start getting my gear on. I pull up my pants, put my hood on, toss my radio strap on, and spin my coat over my shoulders. I climb into the engine and snap my pants closed before I do my coat. I leave my job shirt on due to the cold as I put my bunker gear on. I climb into the rig and I open up the MDC as I put my headset on. I look back at the guys as they finish climbing in and we pull away from the station.*

Me: "Squad 7, 911."

911: "Go Ahead."

Me: "Squad 7's responding."

*I release the PTT and I finish getting dressed.  I leave my mask off for now.  There were times when I used to ride backstep that I would have it on in the engine but I don't do that now.  As we get closer, I start to brief the guys.*

'All right guys, we've officially got our first hot job.  Depending on the victim out the window, the first truck will handle that.  We're making an interior search of the fire floor.  Cook, Garbus, you guys have the line.  Aaron, I want you backing him up.  Dave, you and I are searching.  Let's go break in this new rig and she what we've got.'

*I hear the tones drop and I immediately jump up.  As I hear the tones continue on the radio, I hear the amount of trucks going and I realize that it's a full box alarm assignment.  Confirmed working fire.  I head down right behind Garbus as I yell to the guys.*

'JOB!'

*I let out the call for a job, exaggerating the "O" to the point where it sounds almost inhuman.  As I walk past the engine, I press the power on the engine, letting it go through its checks before I hit the bay door.  Immediately I'm hit by the cold.  Damn that's cold.  I get to the point where I almost shiver before I head to the truck and I press the ignition and I hear the truck roar to life.  I see Cook getting on the engine and it looks like he's the last one, so I quickly shut my cab compartment door with my gear in it as I jog back up to the front of the truck.  I'll get my bunker gear on when we get there.  I go ahead and pull the block heater line out just before I climb in.  I climb in and shut my door as I put my headset on. I shift the truck into drive as I hit the lights and I pull out of the station.  Once I've cleared the bays, I hit the door closer as hit the Q.  I let it wind up as I pull out onto the street in front of the station.  Coming down Broad, you can already see the header against the dark night sky.*

'Oh yeah.  We're heading into job town now boys.  #Goes to fires.'

*I hit the airhorn to clear an intersection before I flip the Q wail on from the E2QB in conjunction with the mechanical Q.  Badass.  I take the central turn lane and I accelerate as I hear the plan.  Once my dad finishes, I hit the PTT as I clear an intersection.*

'We're first due special y'all are taking a line in for search.  We're gonna hit the second closest hydrant.  I need someone to wrap it and we'll blow it in.  We'll get 19 to get it for us.  You're getting three pressure drops if we're running low.'

*Something we were talking about recently.  Instead of just relying on the radio to let the interior guys know when the line is going dry, I've started to send three pressure spikes to them to let them be able to feel it.  It seemed to work in training, but since it's a brand new rig, on it's first real fire, we're gonna put her to the test.  As we start getting closer to the call, I work on getting over into the right lane.  When someone won't get over, I let them have it.  Laying on the Federal,, the E2 QB, and the airhorn.  Sounds like the truck is just throwing up noise at them.  I love this. until I

'Move dumb shit.'

*He backs off and I swing into the right lane as we get closer to a hydrant.  Once we're off the bridge, we go to catch a hydrant.  You can definitely see flames now.  I listen to the first engine's size up and I realize that the first due truck is probably going to be doing VES.  I may have to help them with that.  This could go to all hands if they need the rescue for that, so I'll probably form some of the RIT team.  I guess I'm only going to freeze for a little bit until I can get my gear on.  I pull over and hit the PTT again.*

'Hydrant, officer side.'

*I pull up to it and stop, letting Cook get out and catch it.  I pulled about 30 feet past it so that he can wrap the hydrant and get the coupling out before we head off again.  I watch him from the mirror until I see him disappear again.  I wait for him to give me the signal from the tailboard to start laying in.  Since we're not playing engine, we're only dropping at the hydrant and laying in so another engine can get us the feed.  I've generally operated under the philosophy that we're going to bring our own water to the party, but I guess that's what the 500 gallons is for.  I mean we're not doing fire attack directly, so we shouldn't need to use as much water.  I guess we'll see.*

*after i hear the tones drop  and having bee up anyway i sprint to where i have my gear,a fresh set as i had to trash my old turnouts and hadent set em up on the truck yet but i know it fits, quickly pulling on my new gear i then move to the squad ignoreing the fact im freezing my balls off from the cold as i have my coat unbuttoned and the doors open,i jump in  and slam my door * 'id say crank the heat on but as were gonna be getting a fire i dont think its needed' *i quip pulling my headset on, as kyle gets us going to the call i see the header nd were not there yet so i take the remainder of the ride to psych up* 'shit... it must be rolling' * i release my own PTT as we pull up,i see jays truck parked half assed to slow or stop traffic for us but he looks like he left room for us to get our shit in the truck hasent even fully stopped when jason gives me a nod as i step out promptly helping him with the crowd as he adjusts his suv's parking then takes over manning the crowd as i get ready to search with nick and whoever else weve got coming*

*As we get onto the bridge, I hear the first in engine's size up.*

12: "Engine 12, 911.  We've got a four story apartment building, heavy fire showing from the alpha side, division 3.  Be advised, there is a victim in the middle window on division 3.  Engine 12's passing Second Command.  Engine 12's going to be performing transitional fire attack on division 3."

*I look up and now it's confirmed to be a fire.  As we get to the hydrant, I give my air pack one last tighten before I pull it out of the bracket with a hard thrust forward.  I sit on the edge of the seat as I grab my face piece and hold it in my hand before I grab the mic.  As I see Cook get on the tailboard, I key the mic.*

Me: "Squad 7 to Second Command, be advised, we have left a 5 inch feed at the hydrant located on Broad just past the bridge.  We're going to be laying in."

Battalion 2: "Battalion 2 copies Squad 7.  BREAK Battalion 2 to Engine 19.  I need you to make the squad's connection for them."

*I clip the mic back as I look up and see the fire.  I grab my helmet from the dashboard and I pull the flaps down.  When we pull to a stop, I key the mic.*

Me: "Squad 7, 911."

911: "Go ahead."

Me: "Squad 7's on scene."

*I step down from the truck after grabbing the TIC from the dashboard and I walk to the back of the truck while taking a full stock of what we have.  There's fire rolling out of the third and floor windows.  With the light from the flames, it's almost like its daytime.  I get to the back of the truck where I pull a roof hook out of the chute.  Since it's just Dave and I searching, I'm leaving the Newark hook in the truck.  I come around to the side of the truck where I see Cook taking the first shoulder load and Garbus helping him.  I see Dave watching us as Kyle finishes chocking the wheels on the truck.  As Cook struggles for a second with the shoulder load, I turn to Dave.*

'Take the full set of irons.  I got the hook and the TIC.  Let's go make some grabs.'

*I see that the truck on scene is already working to extricate the victim from the window with a ground ladder while also heading up to the roof.*

'Aaron, Cook.  We're gonna force the door for you guys up there.  12's gonna follow us in.'

*I get to the front door of the apartment complex where I drop to a knee.  I push the knob in and I start spinning it downward using the heel of my hand while I take my helmet off and I grab my face piece from its position dangling from my thigh.  I put it on my head and I get it nice and tight on the top of my head before I do the ones on my jawline.  I take a sharp breath and I can confirm that I'm breathing air.  I check the shoulder gage and my HUD.  Both are working as I pull my hood over my face piece and I put my helmet back on.  I release the chinstrap from its position on the front brim of my helmet where I bring it around under my chin and fasten it again.  As Dave is working on his hood, I take my gloves off from their glove strap and I pull them on.  I grab the NY hook and I also start my helmet light as well as my coat light.  Finally, I start the TIC and I fasten it to the straps on my SCBA I stand up from my knees as Dave heads in front of me.  I turn back and I see the rest of the guys following us with the line while they gear up.*

"Squad 7 to Second Command *breathe*. We're entering the alpha side now.  7 LeBlanc and 7 Valentine are searching and *breathe* 7 Garbus and Cook are on the line."

*I hear the Battalion chief copy us as we head in.  We round the narrow stairs as we get to the third floor.  I look down the stairwell as we arrive and I see Garbus and Cook heading in the building now.  I see the door and I see that Dave is already separating the ax from the Halligan.  Guess we're forcing it.  He hands me the Halligan as I take the roof hook and push one of the prongs into the wall in to my right.  I find the knob on the right side and I find a hinge.  Outward swinging door.  I take the forks and I stand up.*

'Sounding.'

*I take the Halligan and I drive it into the door near the top, one near the middle, and one near the bottom.  There's something near the knob but I can't feel anything else.  One lock, maybe with a security chain but we'll have to deal with that later.  At least it means that someone is in there, but that could be the victim out of the window.  I get back to a knee and I take the adz and get it lined up with the door wedge.  I turn to Dave.*

'Adz.'

*I use my light to illuminate it as best I can.  I feel the back of the ax meet the back of the Halligan, so I know that Dave is ready to strike.*

'Good?'

*I hear Dave say yes as I call for a hit.  I feel the tool go in a bit and I call for another one.  I adjust the tool a bit so that we're getting in behind the jamb and I call for another hit.  After the fourth hit, I take the Halligan and singing my body weight, I pull it as hard as I can to open the door.  It moves quite a bit, but not open.  Damn slums.  I adjust the tool again and I get two more hits.  Now we're definitely behind the jamb.  Another good pull and while I almost go down the stairs, the door opens.  I use my shoulder to push the door and suddenly I meet a stiff resistance near the top of the door.*

'Damn chain.'

*I swipe my arm up through the space where I can feel the chain.  I burry the Halligan with the pike in the wall next to me as I grab my hose strap from my right pocket.  I use the looped webbing and I wrap it around the chain.  Once I've got it basically equal, I do my best to move it up to the top of the door.  I then close the door while pulling the webbing to the hinges.  I hear the chain fall off and I go to open the door again.  Swings all the way open.  I turn to use the Halligan to pull the door closed, but I see the rest of my guys behind me.*

'All right, we're going in.  *breathe*. Line guys, go center.  *breathe*. Dave you're left, I'm right.  *breathe* Everybody stay in vocal contact.  Good?'

*I don't hear anything, so I pull the Halligan out of the wall and I hand it back to Dave.  I pull my hook out of the wall and I drop down to my tripod position.  I rest my weight on my right ankle as I use the hook infant of me along the ground as I slide in.  As I enter, I key the mic.*

"Squad 7 to Command, *breathe* 7's imitating search."

*I leave the hook in my left hand while sliding along the wall.  Every five or so steps, I kick out to make sure that there's nothing in the center of the room.  After 10-15 seconds of searching what appears to be a living room, I get to a closed door and I turn to the guys.*

'ROOM RIGHT!'

*I watch as Cook gets out of the truck through the mirror located in the cab for us to see the guys in the back.  About ten seconds later, I see him up on the tailboard and I see him pointing toward the fire.*

'Here we go boys.'

*I let my foot off of the brake as the truck accelerates to its idol.  I keep the truck at around 10 MPH because I'm laying in.  With 5" hose and those big ass couplings, they're going to come off like misses if I go any faster.  Plus, I've got someone on the tailboard, so I don't want to knock off Cook with a big ass coupling.  As we round the corner, I make sure to swing wide enough to miss the car parked on the corner but I stay narrow enough for the next truck to get in behind me and pass me in case they need to fly the stick.  As we get to the fire, I pull off to the side of the opposite corner so that 33 can get in and reach the building.  I disconnect my headset from the engine and I step out after grabbing my radio strap.  I walk back just past the pump panel and I grab the wheel chocks.  I chock my rear axle as the guys pull the minuteman from the cross lay.  As Garbus steps in and takes the second shoulder load, I reach up and I grab the bite for the last 50 feet.  As I pull it from the truck and over to the front door, I hustle to get back to my engine.  Before I do, I tap Garbus and Cook on the shoulders.*

'Go slay the dragon, boys.'

*I pull it to the front door as much as I can while I head back to the engine.  I crank up the knob on my radio as I get back to the truck.  I open up my compartment where my gear is and I reach into it and I pull my gear out.  I leave it on the ground next to the compartment before I reach over to the pump panel.  I drop the tank to pump valve and then I lock it off before I open up the tank to pump.  As I'm getting ready to head back to the rear of the engine, I hear the guys call for water.  I open the discharge for their preconnect that they pulled and thenI set my engine pressure.  It's set to 150 PSI, but since they're operating on the 3rd floor, I go ahead and up it 20 PSI.  that way, Once I've got that, Im accounting for the height of the two additional stories.  I walk back to the rear of the engine and I step up on the tailboard.  I grab the next section of the 5" line and I step off the tailboard.  I pull the last 20 feet off of the engine and then I grab the section that I pulled off.  I kneel down and then I grab the connection and I go to undo it, but of course, it's too tight.*

'Damn son of a bitch.'

*I walk back to the pump panel where I grab two LDH spanner wrenches and I jog back to the line and I break the coupling off and I grab the line that I layed in.  While I grab it, I hear 19 key the mic saying that they've got our feed for me.*

"7 to 19, standby one."

*I carry the line over to the opposite side of the panel on the sidewalk.  I disconnect the cover on the intake valve and I connect the line to the intake valve.*

Me: "7 to 19, charge it."

19: "Squad 7, are you calling for water?"

Me: "Affirmative 19.  Send it."

19: "It's coming."

*I crack the intake valve to let the air out was I jog over to the pump panel and I crack the tank fill valve.  I look back as my line is filled as I head back to the intake valve.  Now that water is coming out, I completely shut the valve and then I walk over to the pump panel and then I chose the tank to pump and then I open the talk fill valve.  Once I'm done with that, I start putting my gear on.  I get my bunker pants on as the tank fills.  I don't think that they've flowed much because I've got plenty of water being dumped from the tank.  I go ahead and close my tank to pump and my tank circulate.  I also close my tank fill since it's now full and I keep working on my gear.  I put my pants on and then I clip my strap's sway strap to the rear hook on my pants.  Then I swing my coat on.  I pull my hood out of my pocket and I make sure that it sits on the back of my shoulder so that it's under my coat.  I go ahead and do all my coat before I grab my helmet fro my compartment.  I leave my air pack in it's compartment while I see the truck guys trying to throw a ladder for VES.  I hear them calling for someone else, so I run back to the engine as they try to deal with the woman hanging out of the third floor.  I drop the ladder rack and then I run back and I swing my air pack on.  As I walk back to the rear of the truck, I tighten the straps before I grab the straight ladder.  I take that and I rest it against the burins across the sidewalk from me.  Next, I grab the 24 and I shoulder it before I run over to the guys.  I throw it with the fly section in before I roll it once to be right next to the guys on the other ladder.  I pull the ladder off of the building and I go ahead and lock off the ladder on my dogs.  I look to the 32 guy who is footing the ladder.*

'Take it, I got you.'

*I listen for my radio as I wait to hear from the guys inside while I foot the ladder for the VES operation.  The engine already knocked the outside windows.  I watch as 19 comes in and gets ready to pull lines from the first engine.*

'CRAIG!'

*I yell over to their driver who is stepping off of his rig.*

'Hey, right now, you and I are RIT.  The 'Scue ain't here yet.  I need you to foot this ladder for me.  I'm heading back to my rig for the guys.'

*He steps in as I head back over to my engine.*

'Thanks Craig.'

*I look up at the fire floor, which has mostly been knocked down, but the boys in there should still have a good time.*

*I open up the room to my right and I drop down to my stomach.  I run my hands out in a pattern with my feet hooking the door frame.  I feel some furniture, but I do my best to see it with my helmet light, but I don't have much luck seeing any victims.  I sweep the TIC around and I don't see anything.  I decide to close the door for now.  We don't have any idea where the fire is for one thing, let alone trying to find any victims.  I pop out and I yell to the guys.*

'Passing a room.  *Breathe*. Doesn't look like anything on the TIC.'

*I slide up to the next room which I open.  Orange glow.*

'COOK!  GRBUS!  FIRE'S HERE!'

*I hook the door frame with the roof hook and I head in.  I slide in, feeling the heat intensifying, so I know that Im getting closer to the fire.  I keep in contact with the wall, even though I know that's likely where the fire is.  As I keep moving through the room, I hear Cook ask where the fire is.*

'I DUNNO BUT IT'S *breathe* HOTTER THAN SATAN'S ASSHOLE HERE.'

*I extend off of the wall and I grab the hook and I give a strong kick off of the wall and back toward the center of the room.  Hot as a son of a bitch.  I had to be close.  Now that I've got some distance, I use the TIC and I check the back wall.  There's a good amount of heat in the back of the apartment.  I keep the TIC along the ground, but I can see that it's hotter toward the ceiling.  I move back another step and I hit Cook on the shoulder.*

'DAMN CEILING'S REAL HOT.'

*I point the TIC toward the ceiling as I reach past him and Garbus and I grab the hook.  I know that I'm not anchored anymore, but I've got two guys with me, and the line.  I flip the hook around so that I'm shoving with the hook end.  I feel a metal portion of the ceiling and I move over a foot or two and give another good thrust upward.  Drywall.*

'HVAC!'

*I slide the hook along the ceiling until I can find the edge of the metal.  I slide it over a few times to try and force the grate open.  I get it open and then I turn to the rest of the guys.*

'HIT IT!'

*I get back down to a knee and rest my airlock in the corner.*

Me: "7 to Command."

Command: "Go ahead."

Me: "Command, be advised *breathe* we've got fire in the H-VAC system."

*Now that the fire is extending, I come off of the wall and keep searching.  I find a cooler portion of the room and I slide across the ground until I can get to cooler portion.  I sweep my hand over it and I find a lump.  I run it over another portion and I find that it's a bed.  I don't find anything on the top, so I try the bottom.  I feel something under the bed, so I come back a little and I try to see under the bed.  I immediately see some blankets coiled up, so I reach forward, but I can't get under the bed.  I twist and rest my bottle on the ground as I try to swim in.  I still can't really reach it.*

'I'm a damn penguin.'

*I use the hook to reach in and pull the covers off.  Clothes.  I try to get under the bed a little more and then I use my thighs to lift the bed.  I get a little more under it and then I reach for the pile.  Feels substantial.  I decide to go with it and I pull the thing out as much ass I can.  Then I advance out from under the bed some more.  I then evaluate it.  I think it's a kid.*

'I THINK I GOT ONE!  *Breathe*. I'M HEADING OUT TO THE MAIN ROOM!'

*I advance past the guys with the line as Cook works for an angle to throw water into the HVAC.  Once I get out of the room, I advance over to the window some more and I look down.  It's an infant.  I key the mic as I head over to the window.*

Me: "7 to Command."

Command: "Go."

Me: "Command, we have a victim here.  *Breathe* Get me a ladder to the third floor window. *Breathe*. Middle window."

Command: "Copy.  Standby."

*I try to open the window and after a few seconds, I feel the glass shatter and the tip of a ladder fly into the window.  I duck down and cover the kid as much as I can.  I can't feel if they're breathing, but that's not really my call.  While I'm waiting, I look down at my shoulder gage.  I've got more than 2500 PSI, so I've still got some time in here.  We still have the rest of my room and anything else that was on the right side.  I feel the glass rain down on my back as someone clears the widow.  I hear someone call for me as I reach up and I hand the kid over.  I then grab my hook and yell to the guys.*

'DAVE!  HOW YOU COMIN'?!'

*I finish putting my gear on with my air pack.  Since I'm not officially assigned to RIT and the Rescue should be here shortly, I leave my mask off.  I bring it behind my back and over my bottle so that I'm not letting my mask hit down by my calf.  I wait by my rig, which is close to the front door anyway, so I'm in a pretty damn door spot.  Soon, I hear the guys call for a ladder to get a victim outside.  Since I'm close to the front of the building, I go over to the closest ladder.  It's on the wrong window, so I'm going to have to move it.  I bend down on my knees and I start rolling the ladder against the building I get it close to the window that I want to use and then I slide it the rest of the way to the front of the window.  I go to leave the ladder against the sill, but when I slide it, it moves closer to the building on me and then drops in to the window, locking out the window.*

'Shit.'

*I take a tool off of the engine and I start climbing the ladder.  I see Battalion 2 come over and foot the ladder for me as I head up the ladder.  I head toward the top of the ladder where I rest the Halligan forks on the rung of the ladder and I swing it forward to break out the window.  I clear the sash out before I head up as high as I can.  I don't have a mask on, so there's that, but otherwise, I should be good.  I see the victim come toward me from inside and I take the victim and start climbing down.  I can't really tell how the person is doing, so I turn down and yell as I head down as fast as I can.*

'HEY I NEED EMS!'

*I gt to the base of the ladder where one of the medics has just me me.  I hand the victim over and then I adjust the ladder in the sill as I continue to monitor my pump panel and listen for the guys inside.*

*I hear Dave call that he is doing fine as I head back to the room where I was.  I take the right side of the room this time and I head in and search it.  I can't really find anything as I keep swinging around, so I head to the guys and slide out of the room before I head over to the other room on my side.  I head back to where I passed and I head through there.  Once I'm finished with that room, I check my shoulder gage for my air before I start going through the main room.  I'm at just about a 1/3 of my air, so my vibral alert should be going off anytime now, but I want to knock out this apartment first.  I take the hook and I put it against the wall on the right side.  As I sweep along the 6 ft hook, I look at the guys.*

'EVERYBODY CHECK AIR!'

*As we keep going, I check an alcove but I don't see anything before I swing back out and finish up the room.  Once I'm done with that, I keep searching the other side of the room and I yell to Cook and Garbus.*

'COOK!  AARON!  HEAD DOWN!'

*I key the mic as I meet up with Dave.*

'Let's go.'

Me: "7 to Command."

Command: "Go ahead."

Me: "We're coming out.  *Breathe*. Fire floor primary complete."

*I get to the landing and I click out my regulator as my viral alert goes off.  I get out of the building and I key the mic as I walk over to our rig.*

"7's out of the building, Command."

*I get back to our rig and I turn around so Kyle can go ahead and change our air bottles.  Once he's done, I walk over to command and try to get a new assignment for us.  There is still plenty of fire for us to get, so I turn to the guys and bring out our new assignment.*

'All rightly boys.  Guess what.  We're getting a break from rehab for once.'

*Some of the guys nod and start grabbing equipment to get ready to head back into the building.*

'We're now on RIT.  The rescue is going to work instead of us.'

*I grab some of the rest of our equipment as I get ready to walk over and play RIT.*

*I hand the victim off to EMS and take a step back and watch as they evaluate the little kid.  I stand transfixed on the sidewalk, watching people working around this little kid that fit in the cradle of my arm.  I watch as they start CPR.  I stand still on the sidewalk, watching silently.  I know that I shouldn't be watching that.  It's not something that I need to see and I have to work on thee pump panel.  If the guys get in a bind because of me failing them on the pump panel...  Well it won't be good.  For anyone.  I turn around and walk back over to the engine.  I take a stance looking at the building and evaluating it as I stand by my pump panel.  Luckily, the truck is blocking me from them so I don't have to look at the treatment.  I hear the guys coming out and I look over to the chief who is talking with one of the officers on the rescue.  They were RIT, but I guess they're heading in.  As the officer slings his air pack on, I walk over to him.*

Me: 'Hey Cap, you want our line?'

Taylor: 'Where is it?'

Me: 'The guys were on three doing a primary up there.  Where are y'all heading?'

Taylor: 'We're going the secondary on the fire floor and the floor above.'

Me: 'All right, if you want, I'll get them to leave it on the landing for y'all.'

Taylor: 'Nah, we got it.  Thanks man.'

Me: 'Sure, cap.  If you need anything, you know where to find me.'

*I point back at the pump panel as the six guys from the rescue head into the building.  As my guys come down, I count the four of them as they head over to command.  I open up my compartment and I grab them each a bottle of water from the cooler for when they come back.  I bring them over to the front bumper so that they'll have them on their way back.  I stop at the front bumper as I put the bottles down.  I want to take two more steps and look back at the little kid.  I know that I shouldn't, but it's curiosity.  I don't know if I can't help myself or if I don't want to help myself.  I sigh and turn around and walk back to the pump panel for the rescue guys to call for anything.  As the crew comes back and takes a break, I hear that they're on RIT.*

'Well y'all have fun taking my job.  I swear sometimes all you guys want from me is to drive and to do math.'

*I get a finger from one of the guys and I laugh as I grab another two bottles of water and head over to the guys.  I toss them over to some of the guys as we go back to watching the building.   A few minutes later, I hear the rescue call me on the radio.*

R1: "Rescue 1 to Squad 7."

Me: "Go ahead."

R1: "7 Operator, boost our pressure."

Me: "Copy, I'm giving you 5 more pounds."

*I figure that they're only going to the next floor, so I reach over to my pressure governor and I press and hold the button to increase the pressure.  Once it overrides the lock that was on there from what I just had, it bumps up fire and I set the pressure.  I hear the engine make a little bit more of a sound, but that's to be expected as we boost the pressure.  I listen for anything else from them as the some of the crews are getting rotated in and out.  For a single box alarm assignment, I got to give the guys props.  They knocked this thing out pretty damn quick.  And with a couple of grabs too.  Nice job for everyone.  My guys head back to the rear of the house with one of the truck companies who also got assigned to do RIT.  They pull a high-rise pack and the leader line.  Once they get it to the rear of the house, I break the coupling for the 3" and I hook it up to the discharge right below it.  I walk back over to the pump panel and I wait for them to call for water.  I'm going to have to up the pressure, so I want to alert the guys operating in the building.*

Me: "7 Operator to Rescue 1."

R1: "Go 7."

Me: "Rescue 1, we're putting a second line in service at this time.  Pressure on your line is getting to be increasing."

R1: "Copy."

*I go ahead and up the pressure governor to be able to run both lines.  I hear the call for me to charge the 3" line, so I go ahead and charge the line.  I watch as the line fills with water as it snakes around me and toward the back yard of the house.  I hear them call for a reduction, so I knock the pressure down 5 PSI, which I'm told is good.  I wait while I watch the guys get a handle on most of the fire.  There aren't flames blowing out of the windows anymore, so that's good.*

*We head over to Ladder 33 guys who are with us on RIT.  I shake hands with their lieutenant as we stand at the back of the building.  I look over the equipment that we have and at the building.  We're going to probably enter through the back of the building with our line should shit hit the fan.  I chat with some of the ladder guys as the interior guys get a knock on the fire.  They recall RIT to the front of the building and we talk with the chief before he clears everyone but 12, 13, and 32.  We walk back over to the engine and start to pick up all of our equipment.  I put my helmet on the dashboard after removing my gloves.  I then dump my SCBA in it's holder in the truck before I walk over to help the guys with everything else.  Dave gets sent down to break the couplings with the hydrant and with the supply line so that we can pick that up. I hop up on top of the engine and I wait to start packing the hose that the guys feed me from the cross lays.  We get the minuteman loaded up on the top of the truck and then I slide to the back and start setting up sections of 5" back on the truck.  Once I get one of the sections up on the truck, Kyle gets in and backs the rig up so that the guys don't have to lug in all of the 5".  I lay down on the hose bed as we back up and Garbus rides the tailboard and helps to hand me the end of the 5" line and we keep doing the sections.  I think Kyle laid something like 5 sections.  Once we get them all put up, I climb on down and then head back over to the officer's seat.  I key the mic as we head on back.*

Me: "Squad 7, 911."

911: "Go ahead."

Me: "Squad 7's clear, Returning to quarters."

911: "23-49."

*I clip the mic back in it's spot and I turn to the guys.*

'So guys.  Broke her in.  First job in the new rig.'

*I lean back as the conversation continues.  I shut my eyes for a few seconds as we get past the bridge and we get back to quarters.*
