I hear the patient say he has been shot and notice the strange lack of people on the street and suddenly get a bad feeling about this. County informs me that police are one minute out. I look at the patient and see that although he is bleeding, it doesn't seem to be arterial, he has a patent airway, and doesn't appear to be displaying any signs of shock. It is my judgement that waiting a minute or so for treatment will not put the patient's life in jeopardy. Taking all of these things into account and knowing that police are only one minute away, I decide to go back to the ambulance to get my vest and hide because I feel the scene is not safe.
"Okay sir, we are going to help you," I respond to the patient. "I'm just going to go back to the ambulance to get my equipment okay?"
I then look pointedly at the other EMS people I am with. "Hey guys, come to think of it, there is kind of a lot of stuff to get, could y'all come help me with it?" I ask in a tone that makes it clear I am not asking.
