The main cafeteria of Shiloh County Hospital features a wide assortment of food and beverages. It is conveniently located on the ground floor of the main hospital building and is easily accessible from both the emergency department and inpatient areas.

Breakfast: 6a - 9a

Lunch: 11a - 2p

Dinner 5p - 8p

Express Pre-Packaged Meals, Snacks, and Beverages available 24/7.

Items are priced a la carte at very reasonable pricing. EMS gets 10% off. Physicians employed by the hospital get a limited amount of credit towards food/beverage purchases each shift they work. The amount of credit depends on the length of the shift. It is generally enough to cover a modest meal for each 8 hours worked.

Features outdoor seating, which is open seasonally.

*After performing an examination on the corpse of burn victim, who died in the ICU last night from an infection, I head to the cafeteria for lunch.  Grabbing a burger, some fries, and a coke I head to an empty table by the window after paying for my meal.*

*After I walk up to the room with my sister and make sure she's resting comfortably I head down to the cafeteria. It's in between lunch and dinner - so I grab one of the pre-packaged turkey sandwiches and a milk. My stomach is a tad queasy but I ignore it as I find a table a bit outside the door looking onto the ambulance bay. I hate being off of work - especially now that I know Aubrey is okay. I had figured she would be but home was far from the best place from her. I'm willing to bet she'll be here for another couple days then discharged. I'll have to figure something out to make sure that she gets some treatment and takes care of herself: maybe home health might be something worth considering. I idly eat my sandwich as I get lost in thought trying to sort everything out inside my head.*

I grow tired of my water bottle, so with the ER being slo....uneventful...I sneak away to the cafeteria for something a little bit more exciting to drink.

As I walk in, I notice that it's pretty empty, but that's no surprise, it's between meal periods. I walk over to the drink display, bypassing all of the snacks and prepackaged foods. I grab a bottle of Sprite Zero and proceed to the check out.

The cashier scans the soda, $1.50 pops up on the register display. I hand my ID badge over to the cashier. She swipes it and presses a few buttons on the touch screen register.

'You're all set.' she says. I pick up my drink and proceed out.

One of the many perks physicians have at this hospital...we get a limited food credit in the cafeteria.

As I'm exiting, I decide to take a quick little detour outside to get a few seconds of fresh air. As I exit to the outdoor seating area I notice Dunne sitting at the table just outside the door.

God, I know i've seen him before...but where?

I think hard, trying to recall where I recognize him from. Then it comes to me.

That's right. I treated his sister for a UTI yesterday. I wonder how she's doing. Dare I ask? Once she's left the ER, I can't really access her records since I'm no longer involved with her care, so there's no way for me to find out otherwise.

I fight with myself for a second and finally give in to my own sense of curiosity.

*I walk up to the table and politely try to introduce myself again*

'Excuse me? Hi there...sorry to bother you...I treated your...*I think for a second* sister? ... yesterday in the ER.'  I say as politely and non-intrusively as possible.

'May I ask how she's doing?'

*I look up as one of the ER docs walks over to me.*

I remember him as the one who treated Aubrey the day prior and I vaguely recognize him from something or another from the station. I'd been too busy focusing on Aubrey to notice who he was when we had come into the ER.

'I'm sorry, you're one of the docs who works for county EMS, right? It's no bother at all. She's doing alright, still kinda out of it but I expect she will be for a while yet. She is improving though, somewhat. Those antibiotics aren't exactly a picnic. I hadn't really expected her to be at risk for something like this but all things considered it shouldn't be too surprising.'

I stop myself, realizing I'm rambling to this doctor who had likely just wanted a brief status update. I bite back a habitual apology and belatedly realize I've made the conversation awkward, though I'm unsure how. It tends to happen a lot and I seem to stumble into this often. After an extended pause, I continue.

'Thank you for inquiring after her though. I know you probably don't get a chance to follow up often.'

'Well, that's good, I'm glad she's showing improvement....anyway, thank you for sharing that with me. I don't often get to find out what happens to patients once they leave the department, so I appreciate you sharing that with me.' I say with gratitude.

'Make sure you take care of yourself, too.' I say, knowing just how stressful it can be when someone you love is sick.

'Anyway, thanks again and enjoy the weather. It's beautiful out today.'

*I proceed back inside and back to the ER.*

I've been MIA long enough for someone to have noticed by now.
